U need a firewall , there is some good firewall u can use ISA server ( Internet Accelerator and Security ) its easy and good(used for no one can access ur network from Internet). if u talking about wireless Security u should use the mac address , for any network card it has its own mac address, in configuration of ur access point u can find mac address control page it gives u to choose which PC want it to access ( get access or not) it's like a filter. and its very secure.

Well there is 2 answers in ur case:
1. A wireless hardware ruter with Firewall buit-in capabilities.
2. A software Wireless Firewall (i personaly use latest version of Zone Alarm to protect my wireless network from intruders)

Router is a transmitter that transmits the "internet" signal..lol...
ur pc/laptop would act as the reciever and recieve these signals to get an internet connection...
These signals can be either left free or encrypted..so that only ur pc would be able to get these signals(else any user within the range of these signals would be able to access ur internet connection)

If you are tapping someone elses service then yes you need a wireless router. If you have your on wireless service you already have a router. All you need to do is encrypt it.

you can use a router if u want coz they got firewalls in it . what the guys told u to do is better.
