i give that im not a computer fanatic, so my problem may be stupid, however, i dont know why but now whenever i open up a file in my computer the SEARCH window always comes up instead of the file components , and its geting so annoying, the only way to get into the file i want is by right clicking it and selecting "explore". is there an off switch or somthing for this ?

i would download tweakui from microsoft.com
then run a scan for broken icons

Is it only prone to a certain type of file like .exe or does it efect everything? If it is just affecting a certain file type then try this :
1) Right-Click the file and choose open-with (I hope you on XP).
2) Make sure it is designated as a program or executable and not search program.
3) Choose the always run this box or whatever it is called.
4) Hit ok.
Otherwise I have no clue.

Actually sounds like a virus, might want to try a viral/spyware scan

click on the search button on top of the folder?
i to tell you the truth i'm not following what happens in your case.
