Le Monastère
This monastery turned formal restaurant high in the San Rafael hills has a great view of the Central Valley. The dining room is dressed up in antiques, with tables set for a five-course meal; waiters don friar robes, which makes the atmosphere too theatrical for some tastes, but the classic French dishes are outstanding. La Cava, the bar beneath the dining room, has live music Monday through Saturday and is open into the wee hours. AE, DC, MC, V. Closed Sun. No lunch.

Restaurante Cerutti
The diva of San José's Italian eateries, this little restaurant occupies a lovely century-old adobe house near a busy intersection called El Cruce (The Cross). Whitewashed walls are adorned with antique prints. The extensive menu, focusing on modern Italian cuisine, ranges from saffron penne with New Zealand mussels to aragona rabbit with escargots and polenta to the more traditional cordero al horno (rack of lamb roasted with vegetables). No one disputes that the quality of the food is high -- with prices to match. AE, DC, MC, V. Closed Tues.

El Invernadero
The name translates as "The Greenhouse, " which could refer to the ferns hanging from the ceiling of the main dining room or the orchids that decorate the tables. At night the low lighting and candles make this an especially cozy spot. The menu is a mix of French and Italian, with a few Costa Rican touches, such as the heart of palm salad and salmon with a pejibaye (peach palm) sauce. Choose from the likes of risotto de mariscos (seafood), mushroom ravioli in a four-cheese sauce, and corvina al invernadero (sea bass in a creamy asparagus and shrimp sauce). AE, DC, MC, V. Closed Sun.
