The "real" Emily Rose was a young German woman named Anneliese Michel. Here is some info about her death:

"July 1, 1976 – on the day that Anneliese had predicted as the day of her liberation, she died in her sleep. At midnight when, according to what she said, the demons had to leave her, she stopped raging. Exhausted but peaceful, she finally went to sleep and never woke up. According to Physicians Desk Reference, taking Tegretol may cause epileptic obnubilation, (a lowered level of consciousness with loss of ability to respond properly to external stimuli) with fever and hypoxemia (lack of oxygen in blood). Anneliese had all these symptoms, which gave rise to the theory that the cause of death was suffocation."

See the story of her life here:

Here's some info about possession and whether it is possible:

Personally, I don't think she was really possessed, I think she had a mental illness. See, in modern times, we hardly ever hear about possession cases - even though they were more common back then. Why? Are there fewer ghosts? I think it's just because when you get a mental illness, you understand what is happening to you based on your place in history. So since our age is obsessed with science, someone who is mentally ill now is more likely to search for a scientific reason. Whereas back then, when people were more superstitious about ghosts and supernatural events, that reason made sense.

Just my guess anyway!
