If you have a phone with you, you call the agency in your state that handles wildlife. Generally, game wardens handle these kinds of calls. They will determine whether the animal should be taken in for veterinary care or if it is to be put down. Also, it is very dangerous to approach any wild animal when it is hurt. A deer can seriously injure or kill a person if it feels threatened with no means of escape. If you don't have a phone, go find one. Even if you have a firearm avaliable to put the injured animal down, it may be illegal for a variety of reasons to do so. State game laws and discharging a firearm on a roadway being the most obvious violations of law that come to mind.

I'd call someone, probably a hunter, to humanely euthanize. The police would take to long. And this happened to me within the last year, wasn't a deer, was a possum and it was in bad shape but I didn't have the heart to kill it, and when I called animal control and the police could not get a timely response so I called a guy I know that hunts and asked him to take care of it. And I told him not to tell me anything about the deed. Which he didn't and the animal was gone the next day. BTW: This guy hunts with a bow and arrow.

first of all, I most likely wouldnt notice a deer on a highway still alive, seeing as though I am driving at 60+ miles an hour. And calling 911 wouldn't do anything about it, but tell you to call animal rescue people.

Honestly, probably nothing. If I had the time and energy, I'd probably call directory assistance on my cell phone and try to find the number for animal control, but that's too hard to do while driving. And knowing me, I'd be running late for something and wouldn't have time to call anyway.

If it is not injured enough to prevent it from kicking, er..uh.. I mean if it is suffering, I would put it out of it's misery. Then once it is out of life...er mmm uh I mean pain, I would clean up the highway by wrapping it neatly in my tarp so I can take it home...uh..I mean so it won't get blood in my vehicle. Last, since I don't have anywhere to bury it, I would just have to eat it.
