Moon cycles are called Lunations.

New Moon (Dark Moon) - when the transiting Sun and Moon are conjunct - a good time to start a new project as the Moon will be waxing (increasing in size). It is a time of internalization and focusing on the self.

Full Moon - when the transiting Sun and Moon are in opposition to one another - a good time to complete a project as the Moon will soon begin waning (decreasing in size). It is a time of concentrating on external events and events beyond your control.

Eclipses are more potent forms of new and full moons. A Solar eclipse is a new moon and a Lunar eclipse is a full moon.

You could start by checking out an observatory. If you go to www.griffithobs.org (Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles) there are links to moonphase sites that go back as far as 1700A.D. On the Griffith site you scroll down to the link to `Sky Information` then scroll down to `Moonphase` and follow the links for the year you are interested in checking out. A dark moon is also known as a new moon. You might also want to check into what is your rising sign is (Sun Sign). Its based on the time you were born.
