Keep her dominance, maybe not, but I doubt Barbie will go anywhere soon. Fashion, playing dress-up, and games of the imagination are still very much a part of many young girls lives. Mattel will have to work to keep the image of Barbie hip over the years, but they have never really failed in that.

More girls choosing to be tomboys or play video games wont kill Barbie. Girls who can't afford or aren't interested in video games will still be able to fantasize about the beautiful life of Barbie--that won't change until someone makes a cooler dress-up doll, which isn't too likely.

As a Barbie dealer I can tell you that most of the people buying Barbie dolls are not children but adult collectors, whether reliving their childhood or just enjoy what has become an icon of our times, she is not for little girls anymore. Millions of dolls are sold today to play with but the big money is spent on the collector dolls and Gold Label dolls, which are certainly not for play or for kids. With new dolls selling in the hundreds these are no mere toys anymore!
