CD and DVD are 2 different media on which data can be stored. Data stored can be movies, music, files ( txt or others). DVD's are used for movies basically because of its capacity. DVD can hold approximately 10 times more than a CD coz of which movies with high picture Quality picture and sound can be stored on a single media.

CD's play only music (no pictures) DVD's play movies or music or even stuff off of your camera if you download it and put it on a DVD. They show pictures.
