Mayabazar is a Telugu film first released in the Andhra Pradesh on March 27, 1957, produced by B.Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani. The film was directed by the great telugu director K V Reddy who has also directed classic hits like Bhakta Potana, Donga Ramudu, Patala Bhairavi etc.
Mayabazar is renowned as one of the best films ever made in the Telugu film industry. The music was delivered by SaluriRajeswara Rao and Ghantasala has been extremely popular. The film stars NTR as Krishna, ANR as Abhimanyu, S. V. Ranga Rao as Ghatothgacha, and Savitri as Sasirekha. Unlike cult classic films, Mayabazar is pretty much admired by telugu people of all age groups.
The film is based on a popular Hindu mythological tale called "Sasirekha Parinayam", derivative from Mahabharata. It has been re-released on big screen from time to time and still capable of pulling enough crowds to run a house-full show today. The film is also known for its photographic brilliance by Marcus Bartley and presentation of concepts way ahead of its time. A must see for fantasy film fans.
The film is co-produced under the Vijaya Vauhini Studios banner which is popularly symbolized by a swaying flag with Hanuman swooping down. The producers also co-founded Chandamama, a popular Indian fairy-tale classics publication.
As of today the songs and the dialogues from this movie are still very popular.Especially, one should mention the very very famous "Vivaha Bhojanambhu.." song. The other famous songs include "Sundari, oho Sundari..", "Neevena nanu pilichinadi?..", "Lahiri lahiri lahirilo.." and ofcourse "Aha na pelli anta..".
Excellent Cinematography by Marcus Bartley.Great cinematographer Marcus Bartley was the best thing to happen for Telugu films. His marvelous camera work is the highlight of this film. In Black and White films, one needs to set proper lighting to get the depth. And Marcus’s lighting is very unique. And also some of the trick photography that he had done for this film is outstanding.
He had shown the transformation of Savithri (Sashirekha) from kid to matured girl in a very single shot and that shot even today remains mystery. How could he achieve the shot when he hardly had any modern techniques and equipment? There are many such things to tell about his greatness and his exemplary work in this film.
And the other prominent technical work that makes wonder even considering today’s standards is Art work by Gokhale.
