Cheapest thing is to record a CD, make it presentable and send it to some of the radio stations who play that kind of music.

I heard American Idol auditions are being held Aug 8th in the L.A. area (I think they said at the Universal Ampitheater, but I'm not sure of the location).

Record a demo of yourself singing popular songs or even better ones you wrote, and send them out to record labels and places to sing at.
