I think captain Barbosa is still alive because When captain Jack Sparow was talking to the two british guards at port Royle about the speed of the black pearl. One of the guards said about captain barbosa "...that hell itself spat him back out"
I have heard about the theorey of the monkey giving a piece of gold to Barbosa. However, it would have no effect because he did not take it dirrectley from the chest just like Will Turner, who recieved it from his father. In both cases only the one who took the coin was affected. In conclusion I think hell spat barbosa back out!

do u remember when jack and will first visited the witch docter in the second movie, before she gives jack "the dirt" u se a pair of boots on a table wit legs attached it was most likly barbosa and the witch doc. did her stuff on him and well hes alive again

I like your theory. I think Barbossa is still alive because Tia Dalma brought him back. When Jack and Will go to her shack the first time you can see a pair of boots on a bed in the other room, plus when Jack is looking around at her stuff he picks up Barbossa's hat and examines it. If she didn't directly bring him back then she most definitely had something to do with it.

i think it is because it is supposed to be the fortune teller brought him back as she will jack !
