Is it because they are miserable with the living conditions they have to deal with?

Humans were never meant to live in such large populations and so close together. It does something to our psyches. You will notice that there are much smaller communities contained inside the huge warrens our cities have become and these are able to anchor people to a place they can comprehend. It's hard to comprehend 15 million people living in one place.

good question. I lived in san francisco, and the people their always glared and were rude. I also lived in manhattan, and people their were cold and rude as well.

It's a vicious cycle. People in a big city have no time to be nice. Everyone is crammed up living next to each other. Everyone wants to get on the subway at the same time. People have no manners. People are rude because people were rude to them. Yes I agree they are miserable. The rent is high, the city is filthy, too many tourists, crowed transportation, and high populations make people angry, paranoid, untrusting, and downright rude. This is why I moved out of these cities.

Well I live in the city and I smile to people that pass by me by I am not mean to people, some people in the city have waaaaay more money and nicer places to live than people in the country it's just that some times city folk have a lot of stress, just like country folk can be mean too it has nothing to do where you live or your living conditions and more how you were brought up and if you have love in your heart.

I live in a big city and I'm as happy as I can be! I'm not miserable at all! I find people who live in tiny towns are rude because they're all crammed together.

Have you ever seen rats that were placed in a cage with too many other rats?

They eat each other..seriously.

But really, in all honesty...I think it just happens that there are rude people everwhere..they are just more concentrated in a large group like that.

I've known people who live in the country, who if ya step on their land and they don't know you, you get 12guage shotgun in your eye. LOL....so really..factor in both points.

*edit*..Jesus is my superhero...That's a very rude thing to say..I have lived in the city, the country, the mountains, the beach, and the suburbs..right now,I happen to live in the country..and the people that live here..own million dollar estates and helicopters...so PLEASE watch the stereotypes...that's quite a close-minded thing to say...the rest of your statement was pretty true,though...I totally feel you on 'how you are brought up'.

Lol! I know what you mean. When I go to San Francisco, a lot of people seem stressed out. Most of them don't smile or say hi. (Of course, a few do...good for them!) I think it's because city life can be stressful (although I LOVE cities). People probably get tired of seeing people. I don't blame them...I love having "alone" time.

More crowdedness brings out the worst in people When people have more personal space they tend to be happier. Plus, there are more people competing for a limited amount of goods and services.

That is VERY stereotypical, not everyone who lives in a big city is mean, in fact most of them probably aren't. It's just htat you notice the mean ones and they stick with you because they bother you. And people are mean in a big city for the same reasons that people are mean in a small town, they have personal issues to deal with.

I live in small town, and there are some rude a$$ people here too.....I believe the whole world is rude,, more than it used to be.. It is quite aggravating for us who are nice and let people in line here or do this for them.. and what we get in return is rudeness from people whom expect to get their way in life..
