Because sometimes thats all people have. And when all you have is something as abstact as that, the only way you can hold on to it, and preserve it, is to fight for it.

Ancient rivalries are fought over because, from the cradle, you are taught to hate. And hate leads to pain and fear, which then, in turn, leads to fighting.

Prime example is Romeo and Juliet
Think of it this way: Gangs have nothing but territory, and stories of the ones who came before them. So to "honor" those who went before, they fight.

And its all to make those already gone proud.
