We as human beings interpret everything through ourselves, perfectly expressed by the Greek saying, "Man is the measure of all things." We find it very difficult to understand ourselves, leading to the numerous philosophical explanations of human nature. In this sense we are the lock, since we are the stumbling block to our own wisdom. However, by virute of our existence, we will try to understand ourselves, and so we reduce the mystery that we are.

The pivotal point to remember is that this metaphorical lock and key are both inventions of our mind, and as such cannot exist without the other. This is dualism at its best and most complicated, and has been expressed numerous times in history by countless beliefs and religions.
