Why do you think that people are so afraid to express their true feelings? Does FEAR lie at the root of what allows political correctness to proliferate?

In a way, I completely agree with you. What political correctness is, essentially, is people KNOWING that what they think and feel are logically and morally wrong, and so trying to use language to hide that fact and still feel good about themselves. If political correctness were done away with, people would have to address these feelings, and challenge them, or at least be honest and admit that they're sexist / racist / homophobic / classist etc.

Then again, I think that the language that society views as "acceptable" has a major impact on that society (and, needless to say, vice versa). I reconcile the two views with the acceptable part.

Political correctness is another form of peer pressure. If you sucumbed to it as a younster, you probably will now.People who do not express their own feelings are wimps and cowards who will bow down and let others have their way even when it is against their morals and values! Sometimes it is fear and sometimes it is allowed to happen so the person can get their way on the next issue. Pol co. is a hinderance to our country's morals and vitality.

It is a kind of fear. People are so terrified of the ramifications of what will happen if they offend someone they go out of their way not to.

Personally I simply gave up and resigned myself to the idea that at least once a day I'll offend at least one person either intentionally on unintentionally. Go figure.
