Are there lights? If so, they can heat it up and you can prevent it by turning them off once in awhile. Otherwise I'd guess the house must be really hot and I don't know if there's a way to keep the water cool.

How hot was the room? The tank water will rise or lower slowly to the room temperature. Was the tank in direct sun light Sun light can rapidly raise the temperature of a small tank. What type of top (Hood) was on the Tank was the light on?. Incandescent bulbs used in some small hoods or strip lights put out a lot of heat.
An aquarium should be placed in a room where the temperature does not vary by more than 5 degrees. Rapid raising or lowering of water temperature stresses the fish and help infectious disease to take hold.

If the temperture in the house got to warm or the fish tank is recieving any sunlight from a window that could cause the tank to over heat. I suggest him to put a temperature gage on the tank so he can monitor the temp and if he has it near a window or anything that produces heat to move it. These are the most common reasons for an over heat in tanks that i have experienced working in the pet industry for over 5 years any other questions feel free to email me d_sbabymomma@yahoo.com

It was probably from all the other heat circulating around and so the water kinda got the warmth through it so it made it to warm for the fish to live in! The way i think they could get it cooler is to set it in the coolest part of the house! That is my opinion!

When the temperature goes up, the oxygen level goes down. I keep my tanks cool in the summer by leaving the lids open and having a fan nearby. The evaporation of the water in the tank keeps it cool. Just don't forget to keep the tank topped off. He could also fill water bottles with water and freeze them, then put them into the tank.

since its summer everything gets warm. Buy a special aquarium cooler or else dip some ice in the water [made with mineral water]. Don't exceed since sudden changes in water temperature can make the fish ill.

Not enough details to make an informed reply. We need to know how big is the tank, type of fish, how many fish, was it by a window (sun), did you test the water after they died for ammonia and nitrates, what kind of filter. Nobody can say without this type of info, sorry.

The light he has for the aquarium might be to close, or to strong for that aquarium, he has too much internal pumps inside aquarium, too close to the window, not enough circulation. Increasing circulation should lower the temp. in the water a few degrees, moving it to a cooler room, get a fan for the aquarium, and if he really wants to exceed than a chiller.

Is the tank sitting close to a window? If so, the reason would most likely be because of the sun. Also, the sun can get algae to grow inside the tank, which is bad for the fish.
