Marriage is a religious sacrament of specific religious institutions. This is true of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Wicca (though it is referred to as Handfasting1), Hinduism and many of the world's religious expressions. It is not specifically an institution of the State. It is recognized by the state for various reasons, but it is not specific to a given state. The issue of Gay Marriage is complicated since we are not a Christian Nation, and as a secular nation of laws, need to approach this issue with care for all involved. The establishment of a Civil Union2 is the current concession to this minority's need3. It is a suitable one within the parameters of our era. It separates the ecumenical from the secular but allows for the recognition by the individual states of both types of partnership unions. If anything the laws governing Civil Union need to be examined to make sure that the minority, which needs such protection and recognition, have parity and equity, to those who have the option of the ecumenical recognition and sanction. Gay Civil Union is no threat to the Sacrament of Marriage.
If a given religious institution should not wish to recognize the Civil Union due to its own sacred dogma, then that is between the institution and their God. No one should dictate what a given religious expression should do. However, the United States of America is not a religious institution; it is not a Christian Theocracy. The wellbeing of all its citizens needs to be accommodated. The Gay and Lesbian community are a very small minority in this nation, and their rights need to be upheld and protected.

I have yet to hear of a republican who supports gay marriages. If it wasn't in our constitution as law, why try to change it? Our country was founded on Christianity. 52 of the men who formed our constitution were active members of their church. Noel Webster - the guy who wrote the first dictionary...was one of the most amazing chrisians. He could liturally quote the Bible, chapter verse. We are trying as republicans to protect marriage between a man and a woman. That was the origional plan. We never said we were trying to 'outlaw' gay marriage. We are simply protecting Gods institution. People can make their own decisions...we aren't trying to change that.

Why should what two consenting adults regardless of gender do in the privacy of their home bother you? We are a free country and the freedom to choose LOVE and COMPANIONSHIP should be the overriding principle and not gender preference. That's why they support gay UNIONS....they rarely say they support Gay marriage...because marriage implies sanction of God (if there is one) and because most religions frown upon gays they steer clear of using the M word.
FYI I don't agree that it's "not right", but respect your opinion. PEACE!

I'm an Independent. My opinion on what should happen with same-sex marriage is not influenced by my opinion of homosexuality itself. It's simply my belief that both the (Christian) right, and the pro-same-sex marriage advocates should compromise.
This is why I DO support the idea of civil unions, or even commitment ceremonies. Just don't call it marriage, in order to appease the (Christian) right.

They support it because it's popular. You don't get votes by downing something that is popular with so many of your voters. Politicians are basically all the same underneath...."if i back this issue, will they vote for me?"
On another note....if you don't want gay marraige, then don't marry one....it's pretty simple. Otherwise, who are you to care what others do behind closed doors?

Okay you need to revise this. Republican s have come out in mass force against gay marraige. Democrats are the ones that are saying we should allow it.
BTW, heterosexuals have been screwing up marraige for years now. Are the gays really gonig to do that much damage to it?

I'm republican, and not very religious.
I'm for gay marriage so long as they still make kids.
But eh..I'm like 95% in the other direction too, man and woman were supposed to be together.

i could care less what 2 freaks do behind closed doors but when kids get involved is just wrong . Gays will say they were born that way , so were serial killers , and child molesters , just because you were born a certain way doesn't justify that is right .
