Tell them the truth, six is a good time to learn this lesson and you can talk with them about if they want another fish or if they want to have a little memorial service for the fish. Learning about death with pets helps them cope better when people more important go, being able to talk to then about it will be so much better than lying and have them find out later.

Dispose of it before they come home. Not actually seeing the dead fish will make it easier on them to accept. Then take them to buy another. Explain about pets and how they don't live as long as people.

Be sure to do 50% water changes on the new one every week. Feed it only once a day.

And remember, "Only mankind is cursed with the knowledge that all things must end...."

nothing is better than the truth!! Tell them the truth. I think its one of the valuable life lessons. If you buy them another fish sometime it will die aswell so today or tommorrow its quite the same. Then they will appreciate things more since they will learn nothing lasts forever. Sorry for your a bit complex problem.

Six is a little young to be forced to cope with loss, however small. Because a fish is very big to someone of that age. I would hurry to the pet store and find another fish of the same size. If it's a different color, tell her that he "changed his clothes." That's what my parents did, and it worked just fine =)

Take them to the pet store and buy another fish for them. The truth is better.

tell them the truth otherwise they'll resent it for a long time. When they come back from camp tell them calmly and have a burial for the fish. That always wroks instead of flushing it and ruining bathroom pipes. After its buried, promise them you'll buy them a new fish in memory of the old one.

may the fish rest in peace.

You should just tell them the truth or else they will never beleive you and you can get another fish that is better than that one and get the dead fish and burry it in a plant

Six is actually a good age to start learning about death. I think I was five when my first hamster died and my parents sat me down to explain that things don't live forever. Then we had an elaborate funeral to mourn his passing and we buried him in the back-yard.

However, if their at camp and won't be back for a while you could try the replacement trick, but be warned, kids are smarter than you think and they might notice.

Bury the fish in your back yard...tell them what happened when they get back from camp....Allow them to organize a "memorial service" for the fish. This is a good opportunity to learn about life and death.
