You never really "get over" depression. You learn to live with it and adjust your lifestyle.

See a doctor, he/she can recommend medication, if it is needed, to help you to get through the day a little easier. Just understand that taking pills to get you through the day isn't dealing with what the root of the problem is and why you feel as you do.

Take one day at a time and don't worry so much about life... you aren't gonna get out of it alive anyway... so HAVE FUN while you can.
Happiness is different for everyone so you have to "find" what makes you happy and go from there... just stay away from anything that will harm you more (physically or mentally) and Yes, it can be passed on from generation to generation. YOU have to "break the cycle" and just find your happiness in this life.

Prayer, meditation, getting away from your (depressing) environment for a while, even if only for a few hours.... it all helps.

Shaylynn;

Depression can be caused by a variety of things. Bi-Polar is one form of depression, and it IS hereditary. Bi-Polar often results from a low level of Lithium (a chemical made by the body) in the brain. Lithium levels can be adjusted by medication. You should look in the telephone directory for your area for mental health services, and get into therapy. A psychiatrist should supervise the testing to determine what your exact problem is. It is really helpful in many cases, but they will at least be able to guide you in the right direction. Depression takes the pleasure out of life, but it can be treated! Don't wait any longer, get some help - now. You may need medication, and there are many good ones. It can take time to properly diagnose mental illness, but it well worth the effort. Don't give up! If you'd like to chat about it, page me on Yahoo Messenger at STARRSOLDMAN. I'd love to try to help you get through it !!!!! Good luck to you........ Jack

Ok, there are a few ways...

First, light therapy...
Bright lights are a good way to suppress depression in the Winter time. You need extreme bright lights to "kick in" the chemicals that help solve depression.

Summer time, enjoy sunbathing, (of course, put on suntan lotion so that you dont get burned).

Now, exercise to burn off any "lactic acid" that goes to make you tired and depressed. The more exercise you do, the more physically fit you will be and less depressed you will become.

keep yourself busy! Depressed people are those that sit around, feeling sorry for themselves or dwelling on things they think is overwhelming, and cant seem to focus. Do little things to keep you busy, and accomplish little things at a time. Each thing you accomplish, is one less thing you have to do, and its something that is behind you now... (being overwhelmed is a big process in depression).

Finally, there is drug therapy. If you have a chemical imbalance and it can not be rectified, then you can get antidepressants and it can help you, to "even out" your emotions...

See a doctor before you start any type of physical activities and discuss your problems with your depression...

I wish you well..

Jesse

They do say that exercise does help. But that's not the answer in my opinion. I also suffer from depression, it varies when I have things going on in my life relationships, family issues and so forth. A little over a year ago I put myself on medication thru my counselor and psych-they put me on Effexor XR-DO NOT TAKE THIS MED, it's horrible coming off or if you miss a dose. What I recommend is if you have the option to see a counselor then do so-if not see if you can find someone close to you to talk to about things that are bothering you. Rarely do you ever get completely over depression, it just comes and goes in my experience. I wish you the best of luck, I know exactly what you are going through and it is not fun. I isolated myself from friends because I didn't want to talk to them about it-but counseling does help. Hang in there, I know everyone says it will get better, but coming from someone who has been there and continues to go back to depression it does seem to get better most days!!

First, now that you've acknowledged that you have a problem the next thing you need to do is go to your MD and talk about this. He or she can give you a referral to a mental health provider in your area, or even prescribe a low-dose anti-depressant if you want to try that route.

You need to figure out what your emotional trigger is/was and how to avoid feeling bad about this thing (weight, body image, break-up, death in the family, loss of job, etc). Again a therapist can help you with coping skills.

In addition, you should try to eat a healthy balanced diet, take your multivitamins (the B-vitamins are especially crucial for good mental health), and exercise regularly.

Good for you for taking the first step in your own well being and recovery!

If there is a history of mental disorders in your family you probably should make an appointment with your physician and get a referral to a psychologist if he thinks necessary. We all have depressed days but if your depression has interfered with your life or relationships then it's more serious. Talking to friends always helps, eat ice cream, do fun stuff to get your mind off of why life sucks.

Exercise actually does work. I honestly got to the point where I just didn't give a sh*t about anything and decided to take what I had in money and go on vacation. I went to S. Africa, Australia, Fiji, Brazil, and then back to Australia and lived there for a few months. Although I wouldn't recommend this for a woman becuase of obvious reasons but perhaps you need a change of scenary?

I have felt this way many times in the past before I met my husband. A new relationship may help you want to live again. The Dr can help with medical testing. But I recommend trying natural things cuz drugs always have side effects. St Johns Wort has helped my brother out alot in the past for depression.

If you have not seen a doctor yet, this is your first step. Yes, depression can be hereditary. You cannot treat this on your own. You need medical advice. Get a referral to a support group and go.

It's your lifestyle. I'm depressed too but over here we try not to take medication cos it's harmful. I trurn to animals cos I find human beings are one creature on earth who doesn't understand another human. Try to get a life of your own and do what you want and not what otherss want. You've got to seriously think . Divert your thoughts to happy short ones when you get depressed. It takes time but only you can help yourself. Good Luck
