Either side is acceptable if your horse aggrees. Mounting from the left side is easier for a right handed person is the main reason as most people are right handed.

Dismounting A Horse

I don't really know the reason for that it is just something that people do... Really you can dismount your horse from either side...or off the front or back even if you wanted too. I recommend you get your horse used to you dismounting from all sides, in case you have to dismount in an emergency...
Of course the fastest way to dismount is to let go and flop off as he or she bolts... I've had great experience with this. Although my mom, not so much. Although she did get to have a painful ride in an ambulance!

Well you mount on the left side too. And most horses are trained that way. If you tried dismounting on the right and the horse wasn't used to it or an easy going horse. The horse would flip out. What horses learn on one side, they have to relearn on the other. It doesn't make a bit of sense but that is the way it is.

trust me dude. i am a riding teacher and these people that answered dont know what they are talking about. You dismount a horse from the left because in those dayz back then knights would always mount from the left because of the way hes saddle was. the horse had to carry weapons and wear a suit of armor as well. So in that case he had to mount from the left and ever since all riders mount from the left. if you dismount backwards or forwards like that girl said, then you might as well get kicked or trampled on. so hope you have enough sense to know what to do!

People, just like horses, are creatures of habit. Mounting/dismounting from the left side is something we learn at an early age. Just like climbing on/off a bicycle or motorcycle, it is usually from the left side.

If you watch ropers' work, they dismount on the right side after they catch the calf.

Either side is acceptable.

Quite a few factors determines that.

Just like humans, horses come off balanced on right or left. Horses have to shift their own weight when we take our weight off them by putting more weight on the left or right as mounting off.

If we lift one leg up and keep the other down, we will balance on one side than the other. Especially if someone is putting pressure on it, we will have different results based on different feet.

As far as training, for some people are more prone to favor the left side when mounting. I do. When I mount on the right side, it feels weird.

However, I try to mount and dismount on both sides to help my horse gain balance and myself incase of emergancy.

it all depends on the horses training in some cases the trainer will train the horse to be mounted on from the left and right so you can dismount from either side as well.....but in most cases we train them to get on and off from the left unless you are roping off of the horse then you need to be able to get off of the horse on either sides
