Because in the hotel, hot water is circulated through the system (all the hot water pipes) continually in a "closed loop" and in your house it isn't. So in your house, the hot water has to flow out of the water heater, through the pipes before it gets to your faucet.

Don't know what hotel you are talking about -- I've stayed at ones where it takes a while to get there just like at home!!

But, if you are getting instant hot water, I can only assume that you are somewhere that has a supplemental heater pushing the hot water supply along. You can have something similar installed in your house as well. Check the link below for one such system (no endorsement implied!) -- there are many such out there.

Not as many rooms are using it at home. It must travel from the hot water tank to the faucet at home. In a motel it may already be next door or even on both sides of your room.
