Should I look in a specific place so this doesn't happen?

Red eye comes from looking directly into the camera flash. Look slightly over the shoulder of the person taking the picture, or pay to have red eye removal when you get them developed. Many places do it for free as a usual service now. Picture touch ups are becoming a standard practice now.

Different colored eyes will enhance the probablity of 'red eyes' in photos. The red eye problem is one of geometry and light. The light from the flash travels into your eyes and the reflects back to the camera lens at a faster and stronger rate then the light on your face. Much like a mirror reflect more than a painted wall does.

Some cameras use a 'red eye' feature that essentially pulses a bright light prior to the actual flash for the photo. These bright pulses cause your pupils to constrict which reduces the amount of light that can enter into and subsequently bounce back to the lens.

So.. how do you get rid of red eye.
1) Move the flash - YOu notice most advance cameras have the flash 'off camera'. The farther the flash from the lens the less light will bounce back direction into the lens.
2) Constrict your pupils - Open your eyes wide before the flash and don't close them during the 'red eye process' if the camera has one. When the flash is taken allow your eyes to return to norm opening. This obviously takes some coordination with the photographer.
3) Don't look directly at the camera. This will help reduce red eye in most cases but makes it appear the you're 'lost in space' in the photos.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Try not looking directly into the camera. Many cameras these days have a feature called "red eye reduction" to prevent this
