How can we prevent illegal immigration?

Make it illegal to hire illegal immigrants to the point where the business would be shut down when found out. Make it so if they want to go to public school, they have to pay for it. They are denied any non-emergency health care unless they pay for it themselves. And other such things that would ultimately make it impossible for them to live in whatever country they immigrated to and they would go back to wherever they came from. Building a fence around Mexico only gets part of the problem somewhat fixed, but what about the illegal immigrants from Asia, Europe, and the other continents? My solution would work if the government wasn't so afraid of having to enforce it.

We can prevent illegal immigration, but we cannot 100% do it. The gov't need to start being scared and build 2 fences about 10' high and goes from Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Have the fence be 100 yards apart with landmines in between. Any person that dies in the land mine well be left there FOREVER!

I'm so surprised about your question. Where are you from? Are you sure that anybody of your ancestors are inmigrants? The inmigration is a natural and historical movement of human race, more over I'm sure that you come from an "illegal inmigrant" in your own country. The causes of inmigration are changing with the history, now the people inmigrate not because the weather or food, it's because better opportunities in a capitalist world that your own country is an absolute proclamation leader. I don't know if you deserve some words like racist, ignorant and fanatic, but I'm going to reserve, you can even understand this kind of words, this it's too much for your small brain and i don't want to lose more time in "person" like you...

My thought exactly... But I will tel, you this. A friend of mine that I met @ work came from Mexico. He was brought up in one of the richer provinces. From what he told me it's their government that's the problem. In Mexico the rich truely do get richer, and the poor end up on the street because a bag of diapers costs 18.50!!! So you can see why they all come flocking across the border. We need to overturn the government, and help their economy a little bit so maybethey all go back. We've been trying for years to stop illegal immigration by force etc.etc. so maybe we should try something new...Hey - maybe if we put a little more efforts into restoring Mexico rather than Iran...... Hmmmm points to ponder.

Illegals come looking for work. Impose very stiff fines on any employer who hires them.
Do a better job of policing the border which would include more border patrol police.
Use technology. e.g., infrared heat sensors, movement sensors, etc.
Institute a national ID data base. The ACLU, liberals, privacy nuts, intellectual elite, etc. will come out of the woodwork on this one.
The public has to be prepare for the higher cost of doing this both direct and indirect. Illegals are a source of cheap labor that holds down the cost of some goods.

I've heard of an idea where you have two fences running parallel to each other, barbed wire on top. Just before you get to the fence there would be a huge ditch so no one could drive into the fence.

I'm for that--plus guard towers with heavily armed guards, and dogs roaming around between the fences.

Another thing that would help--go after companies that hire illegals.

Across the entire Mexican/U.S.border,dig a ditch 50' deep,6' wide,fill with concrete.After it dries, form a 6' thick wall 30'high,with 6' of barbed wire on top. Next step,30' of bouncing betty landmines until you erect the next 50'deep,6' wide,then 30' high wall with barbed wire. On the other side of the 2nd wall,have border patrol. Use Coast Guard and Navy to patrol the water routes.Enough of this screwing around.

My friend recently came up with a good one:

Get some unmanned small helicopters with guns on them and have them just fly around the boarder and shoot anything with a pulse. Of course, we need to put up signs to warn people and have the media broadcast it to the American Citizens so that we don't accidentally get shot too!

I also like the idea of building a giant moat filled with Alligators and Snapping Turtles, then putting razor wire behind it for anyone that managed to get through (then you could deploy the helicopters for the one or two that might possibly get through that).

There is no way to prevent it as long as American wages are higher than in the rest of the world. This happens because the American government takes advantage of the power.
The average American does not know what is going on around the world. They just know what CNN shows which is already scanned by the US government. They don't have freedom of speech. They have to show what is to the government.
It is a complicated topic.

1. Refuse citizenship to all illegal immigrants.
2. Close our borders or take stronger force at our borders (that doesn't mean just standing there and watching them cross the border; that means threatening tear gas or threatening to shoot).
3. Deport the illegal immigrants back home to Mexico and tell them to keep out of America.
