Elphaba from Wicked....born green, unloved by her parents, hated by peers, but had a gift. She teaches any reader that appearence has little do with who you are on the inside; evil is not always something you're born with; and sometimes people actually get what they want. She overcame many obstacles, and although she tried to do so many wonderful things, the outcome was usually not to anyone's liking. She stood up for what she believed and was outcasted because of it. She's a strong, talented, beautiful woman.

Literary 'Villain': Steerpike from Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels. Probably the most intricate and well drawn portrait of the human manifestation of the blindness and driven nature of evil. And he is sympathetic at the outset too! Not a two dimensional "typical evil guy," but almost like brushstrokes seen on oil paintings. In Peake's artistic writing style, he is like a character that walks off the canvas and yet is trapped there by his very nature. A beautiful and hideous paradox. Interested to see some other answers...this is a great parlor game!
