the most advanced Intel CPUs are the Core 2 Duo (officially released on July 27) code named Conroe (E6300, E6400, E6600, E6700, X6800) for desktops and Merom (no products out atm) for notebooks. For servers and workstations it's the Woodcrest. But technology progresses fast, in the beginning of next year a quad-core CPU code named Kentsfield and later an 8-core CPU code named Yorkfield (with 45nm structure) will follow.

AMD
notebooks: Turion /X2
desktops: FX-62
servers: Opteron

best for desktop is the Intel E6700 (best price/performance) and for notebooks Intel Core Duo T2700 (but a T2500 will do the job nearly as good) until the Merom arrive.

The best for a laptop is a Core Duo (T2300 and up).

The best for a desktop is any one of the Core 2 Duo series, I like the Core 2 Duo E6600 if you are looking for specifics.

The most advanced AMD is the Athlon 64 FX-62 but the Core 2 Duo chips from Intel pwn it.

The latest AMD is the Opteron, while the latest pentium is their new core 2 processor. However, being brand new processors, they are each really expensive. A cheaper processor, such as the AMD Athlon 64 FX would work fine. Besides, the latest processors haven't hit most of the market yet.
