I don’t really know how it became a taboo, but that is where it stems from. Gastric excretions from your body at some point became vulgar and where not looked upon as something you should do; now when people do them people laugh because they know you’re not supposed to.
In any case, farting or burping is completely normal and healthy. It can actually be detrimental to your health if you hold it in and don’t do it. When you digest foods you produce gases, those gases have to exit your body, if they don’t they will build up, if they build up they can rupture your stomach or intestines.

Take this into consideration. If the action of expelling gas from your rear end was called "reading" you might not think it was as funny.
But if there was a person in a chair with an open book and someone said "Hey he's farting!" that would be funny!
it's really just the word that makes us laugh, not the action itself.
"Poop" is another one of those words......

Because we know they smell sometimes and bad...."it's not the smell it's the burning of my eyes.....George Carlin"....and you could be the "victim" of the stench........never seen someones face contort when walking through the "green" fog? Besides it's ha-ha funny and sometimes funny funny(strange) to hear the sounds of it.

I don't know, but little kids think its hilarious! And their giggling is contagious. Also, if you want an instant laugh, try just saying "booger" in front of a group of second-graders.
