The points are of no consequence really, but what someone may have learned, from viewing, voting on, or answering questions (especially when they see their answer was wrong), is worth having. Look at it this way, if people are having a chat, and the subjects change, as they do, a person involved who knows nothing on any of the topics raised is soon going to feel left out, get bored. So, ANY knowledge that we gain is useful, even if it only enhances our social life. .............In my opinion :-)

I've gotten to level 5 since I joined on May 23, and I can answer, ask or comment on any number of questions. (I don't do many, though) I can vote on 100 a day, and rate (thumbs up) 100 a day.

My name is higher and higher on the leader board, and that feels kinda cool. I also really enjoy being a "showoff!" Seriously, I know an awful lot of stuff, and it's nice to use some of the seemingly useless information filling my noodle.

The more points you have the less of a life you have!

For me, points are recognition from strangers for my opinions. It is a form of validation. It also shows me if I am on track with public opinion or not. Although I don't follow others overmuch, it is good to know what others think, and it is reassuring when others agree with my random musings.

I can imagine several dozen motivations that I perceive among others here, I won't speak to their motivations.

I think it's somewhat of a social standing within the yahoo answer community. The higher your points, the more you know (or think you know) lol

It's like a pinball machine. I think that humans are driven to do certain things even if there is no real reward.
