Any business can realistically be started. i think the primary factor is the product, what you are trying to import and/or export. If it's something that people want or need, with a lot of hard work you can make it successful

I'm assuming that you're looking to start such a business in the United States, and if so the you'll need to consult most likely with an attorney who specializes in US/International law and how it applies to imports and exports...once you've decided what it is you're looking to import and/or export, that is.
Setting up relationships with suppliers in various parts of the globe, arranging for agreements on payment and shipment with regard to goods, and then ensuring that you've put this business together in a way that will allow you to market these goods at home and abroad is crucial, and for that you may need to travel; but again, the internet can also be a handy tool in doing the legwork in this regard.
Your best bet would be to contact someone already in such a business - ideally, someone with whom you wouldn't be competing (so they don't feel that they're going to be giving you their trade secrets) and ask their advice on how to make this a reality.
Good luck!

It's too broad a question. For example, exporting pork into Middle East or automobiles to Korea is likely to be a failure of epic proportions. But there are successful export-import businesses out there, to be sure.
