Believe it or not, a glass of warm milk. Yes, it IS disgusting, but the minerals and amino acids should help.
On a personal note, I did alternating shift work many years ago and opted for one of those magnetic mattress pads. It worked like a charm. A Japanese company called Nikken makes the best. But be forewarned, these are not your typical refridgerator magnets (read that as "they are not cheap"). However, I found a site where you can get them 15% off retail.
It's www.Nikken-Wholesale.com
Sweet dreams! Zzzzzzzzz

If you have time (like a week or a few open days), try to sleep later and later each day.
This will bring you around full cycle. When your sleep schedule is realigned, make an effort to stick it there.
What are you doing at night that keeps you awake?

Congratulations for quitting alcohol! That's huge! Try chamomile or mint tea and soak in a hot bath with some aromatics(lavender and chamomile) or a massage with lavender oil. Spray your sheets with lavender scented linen spray or wash you linens with lavender water. It will help you relax and fall asleep.

Yes - try Nytol (assuming your in the UK, not sure if they sell in the US). It works really well, it's helped me in the past. Don't take it for more than two weeks though. If this doesn't help I'd go and see your doctor. Well done for giving up the booze though!
