I tapped a parked car in a parking lot and it put a pretty good dent in it. I left them my info saying I would be financially responsible and never heard from them. 2 weeks later I get a letter from the police saying I was involved in a hit and run and that criminal charges could take place. I called the detective taking care of the case and he said we would have to discuss this in person. What is going to happen? ANY HELP?

You did the right thing. You can't sit and wait around all day to see if someone show's up.. leaving a note was your option.. and you were right to do so. Perhaps the wind blew the note away, maybe the car's owner threw it away hoping to get more money. Either way, as long as you tell the truth, then you're okay. They had to know somehow that it was you who hit the car.. the person either kept the note and told the cops your name.. and neglected to mention the rest, or there was video of the incident.. in which case it would have you writing and leaving the note.

Tell the truth.. you hit the car, you left the note, you're accepting responsibility.. you'll be fine.

I have had some experience in this area and the most you can be charged with is leaving the scene of a accident if they want to be technical about it. I don't understand seeing you supplied all your information what is going on, unless the owner of the vehicle has turned the story around and has made it out to be more then what it is. I would talk to a lawyer most have free consultations. I also don't understand why the Detective wouldn't have came to your residence to get your side and information. i would be Leary if I were you. Something doesn't sound right by the information you provided in your question.

I don't see how it's hit and run if you left a note...maybe the car's owner wants to try to milk it for all they can. It's not like you could have found the car's owner...point out the fact that you were in a parking lot.

They had to have found the note; otherwise how did they know it was you?

You did the right thing. Maybe the wind blew away the note you left.

The witness to the accident (the one who told the police) should be able to confirm that you did leave a note.

Contact your car insurance company for help in getting the police to drop the charges.

The note was proably still there, that was proably how they found out who you are. Some people are asses like that. If you explain to the detective you left the note like that I wouldn't imagine there would be charges, it was somewhat a misunderstanding.

You can't prove you left a note, he's probably going to talk to you or arrest you. Go in, don't make them look for you and tell them what you told us, better yet, get a lawyer to come with you.
