I have cayenne peppers growing in my garden. When they were green, they looked great. But now that they are turning red, the ends are drying and shriveling up...it almost looks like they are burning up from the inside (ha ha). What am I doing wrong?? Thanks!

Yes, the best thing to do is pick them green and then hang them up to dry indoors...that way they won't rot. I usually string them and hang them in my kitchen..They dry nicely and then I can crush and keep them in jars.

Do not pick them green. That is ridiculous unless you want green cayenne peppers.

Make certain the plants are adequately watered. The peppers may be picked after they begin turning red, but if you can wait until they are fully red, that is better. When fully red (or nearly so), pick them. Keep some of the stem attached to the pepper if you are not going to use it immediately. You may use them fresh or dry them (keep stem attached to prevent mildew) for grinding into "crushed red pepper".

As the others advise, pick your peppers while they're still green. Otherwise, your plants are doing what comes naturally - putting all their energy into creating the next generation of pepper plants. Once that is done, the plants will die. So unless you're planning to produce mature cayenne seeds to grind, pick the pods now.

You need to pick them while they are green, like tomatoes, and let them get red in teh house. Then, where you picked, new ones can still grow.

that's happened to me.
Hey, I'm going to stop by the farmers market today and there's this farmer that grows great stuff. I buy tons of peppers from him (because I can't grow them myself). I'll ask him about it.
