Implantation of the embryo on the uterus takes about 6-12 days after fertilization, usually on the 10th day. Thus you can get a positive result on the most sensitive pregnancy tests seven days after ovulation as the earliest but better results can be obtained on the 10-12th day after ovulation.(Ovulation takes place on the mid-cycle). The result of the pregnancy test largely depends on the level of a hormone "human chorionic gonadotropin" or HCG (hormone released by the placenta right after the embryo begins implanting into the uterus). The reading of the result (as 3+ or 1+in your case) largely depends on the amount of HCG on the specimen (blood or urine) tested. In urine test,mid-stream early morning urine will give better result as the HCG present in the urine that time is high. If testing early pregnancy at any time of the day,a 4-hour wait would be a good idea. The variation in the reading doesn't mean you will have twins. Whatever is the reading on result and it turns out positive it means you are pregnant. At the suggested period of your pregnancy as 4 weeks,it is still a tiny sac which can be seen through ultrasound, infact in some cases a trans-vaginal ultrasound is needed to view it as it is a bit difficult visualizing it through abdominal ultrasound.

Well everyone's body is different and puts out a different level of HCG horomone. I took 3 early pregnancy test when I was 5 weeks pregnant with my twins and it was negative each time. If twins made more HCG than it should have been positive because it was after I was due to start when I took it. Your baby could just be producing a lot more pregnancy hormone really early.

No, I tested early with all my pregnancies. I have 5 children with a set of twins in there. There was no difference is the HPT results with the twins. Only at my first appt when I was larger than my doc thought I should be.

All the test does is detect Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, or HCG in most women. The tests are fairly sensitive, especially nowadays, and will pick up the HCG hormone in most women. By most, I do know of women who have tested negative into their second trimester. Their hormone simply wasn't recognized by the test.
These tests can detect presence, but not concentration of levels.

NO, that does not mean twins. That simply means that you have high HCG levels in your urine. It would be too early in your pregnancy to see anything other than your yolk sac. Did your doctor say that you were for sure pregnant? did you schedule your next appointment? If you were pregnant with more than one baby then you would have more than one yolk sac.
