Martin guitars are very good. Fender makes some decent ones. Washburn also makes some nice ones (under the Oscar Schmidt name). But, I would recommend something else....a semi-hollow body electric guitar. They look nice, can be played acoustically or electrically, have a nice sound, and you can get a great deal from www.musiciansfriend.com. I recommend an electric guitar because the strings are more comfortable than an acoustic guitar's strings because acoustic strings are tighter. An electric guitar is more forgiving when amplified too, because you don't need to have perfect finger placement for it to sound good. (with an acoustic guitar you need to have your fingers perfectly placed and you gotta push down HARD or else it won't sound good) Also, a semi-hollow electric guitar can play any kind of music, from classical to punk to screamo to bluegrass. So, that is my recommendation....everyone thinks they need to learn how to play on an acoustic and then later they can try an electric, but that's not how it has to be.

For your first guitar you should buy one that fits your body well. For Example, I have short arms and buy one that is a little on the smaller size. Regadless, I would actually go for an ELectric./Acoustic and get a small amp to go with it. THese look super cool and offer the acoustic sound or the ability to plug them in and rock out. ALSO if you really are starting out then DONT BREAK THE BANK. You dont need the top of the line guitar until you are really good and have decided that you will continue to play. Get a lower priced guitar and play until you know enough to know what you are really looking for in your instrument.

Go for the gold and get a Taylor - especially if you can afford it. Taylors are crisp and sound amazing. If you want a more smooth sound, then a Martin is your best option.

For cheaper alternatives - am Alvarez is generally smooth sounding and stays pretty good. A Talkamine is a crisper sounding chaper guitar.

If you have the money and are serious about playing, definately get a Taylor or Martin. Also, if you ever go buy a guitar, always try to get the shop to throw in a case, strings and picks. Most will give you them for free. Most of all, go in and try them. See what sounds best and plays best for you. To each, his own.

For beginners -- an Epiphone, or if you are really just starting (and are kinda young - no offense) I would go to the music shop and buy the all-in-one for beginners. Comes in all different makes - but that's where we started our kids. For like $100.00 you'll get a decent acoustic, gig bag, strap, pics and strings -- and sometimes a tab book for beginners.

Check it out - don't spend too much because you may not like it.

(Martins, Taylors, Gretch, Guild, Gibsons are all great guitars but are too expensive if you are only just learning)

The best guitar to go for if you are looking at playing acoustic music is either Spanish classic, or Steel String Acoustic

If you want to buy on-line, go to the Musicians Friend website for some really good deals on pretty good and quality guitars. And if you don't mind small blemishes, they have a Scratch 'n dent section where you can really save some serious money on good brands. Otherwise, you may check your local pawn shops for some used cheapies.

If your just starting out then something cheap and easy to play is good like a Yamaha or Ibanez. Then move on to the more expensive ones which sound better. Like a Martin, Taylor, or Gibson.

Yamaha, Takamine, and Epiphone make good guitars that don't cost an arm and a leg.
