There are so many movies out there that don't get the recognition they deserve because of big-named, big-budgeted "blockbusters" that take up the theaters and such... I always wonder why some people snub the independent film circuit, because some of the movies are really, really good...

One that immediately comes to mind is Shattered Glass, based on true story about Stephen Glass, a young reporter, who made stories up and passed them off as true events. I think I've watched that DVD at least 20 times... it also has one of the best audio commentaries I've heard.

What are some of yours?

Years ago there were a few: Girl With the Green Eyes; Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

Not long ago there was a good biopic of the golfer Bobby Jones.

Whenever I watch the Oscars, there always seems to be some "small" films that get awards, yet never come to the mulitplexes.

Passion Fish. It's a 1992 film about a nasty soap opera star, paralyzed in an accident, who is forced to live in her old family home on the Bayou in Louisiana, where she must rely upon a series of nurses, but is so disagreeable that they leave her employ until, finally, one shows up guaranteed to stay. Great dialogue and wonderful performances.

Written and directed by John Sayles, starring Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, Vondie Curtis-Hall & David Strathairn.

I love 'Far Away, So Close' (sequel to Wings of Desire) by Wim Wenders. I was painful to see what Hollywood did with the idea by making 'City of Angels'

There is also 'The Wild Geese' a fantastic movie with great performances and a message that after 30 years continues to be very relevant. They just released it on DVD and more people are paying attention to it.

High Spirits
It's from 1988 and it's about an Irish Castle that's going to get repossessed so they decide to pretend that it's haunted in order to get more tourists to visit it but then there are actually ghosts. Bit cliched but still really fun!
