They're two entirely different animals. A chipmunk is brown and white and smaller than a squirrel. Find pictures of both on the internet. That will clear things up for you fast.

squirrels have big bushy tails and are grey, black, red and sometimes whtie. they r much bigger than chipmunks. chipmunks are brown with a white stripe down there back. they r much smaller

Yes they are in the same family but they are two different species. Sugar Gliders are also in there family. Their ability's to glide changes from one to another, their family units and reactions are different, and they're colors are different from on another!

chippies are smaller and sometimes borrow, they r brown w/stripes and not as fuzzy tailed as a squirrel.
