Are they actually smart or looking for self validation from a bunch of strangers? In my opinion, when you're smart you are secure enough to know that and don’t need to announce it... But that's just my opinion. What do you think?

I agree. The only reason for boasting about something is if one is not sure that it's the best there is. It seems that proclaimed brain size is in inverse proportion to proclaimed penis size in many sad cases here.

I am interested in "self validation from a bunch of strangers". How do you do that?

You can be smart AND still need validation from others. I'm not exactly a genius but my IQ is rather above average. But because of learning disabilities, I was in special ed classes till the 9th grade. Years of being labeled "dummy" by other kids had a serious effect on my self esteem. As a result, I feel a strong need to prove my intelligence to others.

I've made similar observations about "arrogant" people. People who brag seem like the think they are better than others, but it's more likely they are desperately seeking validation that truly confident people don't need.

I think they are smart, everyone is smart in their own way, but not geniuses for the simple fact that if you need to flaunt the fact that you are smart in front of strangers, you are just telling yourself that you are and not having a lot of other people believe you. I think i'm smart, but I don't need to let the whole world know, I'm secure enough. :)

Confidence in your opinion or side of a debate is what makes you smart. Now that is not to be confused with being correct. The onyl people that are stupid are thw ones who are afraid to say what they think and blindly follow others opinions.

If you are smart and have to say you are smart, then you may be very high in mental intelligence, but very low in social (common sense) intelligence.

There's a big difference between "smart" and "intelligent"

I think the song by the rock group Kansas puts it best; "...and if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know".

Yup, same here. Our good points are for others to find out and not we telling others!
