My first job was in 1982, operator on a mainframe. It was the size of a kitchen, used disks the size of car wheels, and had 1/2 MB of memory, programs took 8 hours to compile, equivalent ones now take 2 seconds, and yes it did cost £1M.
They were HOT as well, when the air conditoner broke one winter, we had all the doors and windows open in the computer room, it was snowing, and we had to work in just shorts because of the heat.

What kind of computer?

Mainframes could cost a million pounds. PCs could cost about 1000 pounds but they had little memory and small disc sizes. If you wanted more you had to pay up to 3000 pounds for one.
