Probably for the same reason phoenetic isn't spelled the way it sounds.

The word dyslexic was the word created for the dyslexia test.

If you could look at the word, say it read it and spell it, you were passed on all counts of dyslexia.

If you failed on either of the three above tests, you were imediately placed in the bottom class at school. Picked on, and suffered at the hands of brutal literature bullies.
