My car is a 1996 Pontiac Firebird. Why does the steering wheel shake violently when I reach 55mph?

It FEELS like the front passenger side tire is loose, or some crap. What can I do to fix this problem? What is it, exactly?

You need wheel balancing and/or front end alignment.

you may possibly have a tire with ply or belt separation. this might be hard to detect with tire on the ground. jack up that side of the car and inspect the tire tread looking for soft spots and /or belts showing thru.

the tires could be out of balance or a wheel could be bent or a tire is out of round. you could also have bad front end parts. take it to where you get your tires put on and they should be able to check all that out for you
