That one guy provided a lot of advice...that looks pretty intimidating. Each school/cooperating teacher/college mentor has their own set of expectations. My experiences seemed a little more relaxing.

First of all, principals rarely observe the hired teachers. They don't want to be bothered with a student teacher, who is already observed by the cooperating teacher, and the college mentor. If you wanted that to happen, discuss it with your cooperating teacher.

You shouldn't need parental contact stuff and a disclosure statement (your list of rules and expectations). Part of being a student teacher is just learning how to teach. The blessing is that the coop teacher already has the rules and the classroom in place. You should not change the rules, nor should you change many procedures.

Do go to events such as dances and sports games, even if you don't like them. Your students will expect it.

Definately get to know the faculty.

Eat whatever you want.

Be prepared for this to be the hardest experience of your life...and then your first year teaching will be ten times more difficult than student teaching!

Good luck!!

I'll do more than wish you luck!

I had a student teacher last year. He was terrible. Learn from his mistakes (this was all advice he did not take, and he suffered for it!):

1. Introduce yourself (or get introduced) to the principal and the department head.

2. Schedule formal observations by the prinicpal and the department head so you can get valuable feedback, and maybe even something you can include in your portfolio. This helps build professional relationships.

3. Attend some student functions. Students will connect with you more if they believe you are interested in their lives.

4. Bring your lunch - you are going to be poor, packing is the cheapest!

5. Ask the principal about the hiring process. Finding out what to expect in future interviews is a great tool!

6. Research the school you are placed in ahead of time. Find out info about student population, standardized test scores, etc.

7. Get sample copies of the standardized tests that the students will be required to take, so you can model some lessons/activities after the format.

8. Don't listen to people who tell you not to eat in the faculty room, and peole who tell you not to smile. Build relationships with your colleagues, don't just be a puppy that follows around your cooperating teacher the entire time you are there.

9. Have your expectations, rules, and parental correspondence ready to hand out on the first day. Your first day sets the tone for your total experience. If you are unprerpared and disorganized, students will know and they will not take you seriously.

And,
Good Luck!
Be confident!
If you are nervous, fake it till you make it! Don't be afraid to ask questions to your teacher and other teachers in the building
