We're overdue for a pole reversal, but it won't be sudden. Over a matter of decades, our magnetic field will get weaker, disappear, then come back inverted. The effects will have mostly to do with our navigation; it really shouldn't have any other profound downsides. I just wonder, do you think they'll start drawing maps with south at the tops, or just make them upside-down?

The magnetic poles do cycle around every few millenium. Right now the north magnetic pole is in central Greenland, but I'm afraid it will take many tens of thousands of years to reach the rotational/geographic south pole.
