Remember in those old cartoons whenever one of the characters gets a black eye that they would put a steak over it as a remedy? Like Elmer Fudd. Who came up with this crazy idea? The cartoonists? Is it because it is something cold to help with the swelling or is there some other meaning to it? Yeah I know, a weird wonder, but I'm bored at work so any explanation would be interesting to help the day go faster!

They thought that something in the meat would draw out the discoloration around the eye. People really did this in the old days.

Sounds like a good question to ask my Grandma. I would guess they used meat because of the cold--to reduce swelling. (I know other people said the same thing, but...) When I read this question, I remembered watching an episode of The Brady Bunch where they did that. I kept wondering why they didn't just use ice.

probably because back in the old days more people were prone to eating more red meat so the cartoonist probably thought that people would more likely to have steak in the freezer rather than an icepack. It's just a thought, but they try to keep a familiar feel rather than a big block of ice.

Actually, there was an article in the news a few weeks ago about steak on a black eye. They were stating that your eye could become infected from the bacteria of the raw steak. (of course, you wouldn't want to use a cooked steak!). I guess in the "good ole' days" there weren't ice cubes or ice packs?
:)
Hope this helped you for about 30 seconds or work boredom.

Actually, it's an old wives tale if you put a steack over your black eye it will be cured in short time. I don't think the cold has anything to do with that, but the rear meat. Mmmmhhh... Maybe I should ask my grandma.

For the same reason your Grandma does other weird things like if you bang your arm put butter on it so it won't bruise or use cold, wet tea bags to relieve sunburn... (which, by the way, actually works quite well)

I don't know if it's true, but they say there is something in the meat to help you not get a black eye.

It was also felt that the meat would draw out the dead blood.
