When that happens it is trying to access a feature of Wrod that was not originally install. You need to put the Office install CD into your drive, then open Word. When it trys then it will find what it needs on the CD and install it.

THis often happens in windows xp wen u have a sub account which does not have the administrative rights..Ask the admin to give you those rights and then try..if tht doesnt work..try re-installing WORD once u get the rights.

as a computer technician a need a bit more information like:
operating system? (XP,WIN2000,98,ME)
office version? (XP,2003,2000,97)
it makes a difference.
for XP users (Oh g-d) you should know that windows XP is FULL of bugs and the best thing to do is reinstal the pach that was used in the auto update. sometimes the pach is incompleate.

this usually means that it has become currupt or it was never installed proply in the beginning .
I would uninstall and re-install .

Have you tried uninstalling MSWord/MSOffice & all patches (if you can see any in control panel) before reinstalling?
