No, no, no. Blacklights emit near-UV light, which would convince him that it's day. Instead, use a very low frequency red light, as close to infrared as possible in your visible spectrum.

NO candle, NO blacklight!!!!!
youdamned.. is right
the pet stores sell bulbs that are red and are routinely used for this purpose and also for heating during night. it is not at all correct to call them infrared, because true infrared would create too much heat and not much light for you to see anything. they are red, just normally red. Looks great- go to local zoo with nocturnal expositions and you will know they are red..

If you plan to use it for heating the terrarium at night (good idea), choose the right strength (watts) of it so that the temperature in the terrarium is not too high neither too low.

Here they cost as much as full spectrum fluorescent bulbs for reptiles.

Yes, there are bulbs for nighttime, I'm not sure what they are called but they do sell them. Ask at your local pet store, if they don't carry them, they should be able to order one in for you. They work in the same way your heat lamp works only they cast a red glow so as not to disturb their nocturnalism and allowing you to enjoy watching your pet at night.

You have a gecko for a pet? That's very interesting. Is it in an aquarium or what?

You could light a candle by his area, that's not too bright.

Buy a infrared camera and you can watch it with no light from your PC.
