I'm just starting out doing vexels or vector animation. But looking at those, I don't think it's the same principle. They look like original images.

They are terrific!!!!! I would like to know more about this sort of art as I know completely nothing. I do portraits in watercolour but this really interests me. What are vexels and vector animations how would I find out more about it all?

Take a look at some tutorials out there, there's tons! If you have Photoshop you can do something like that using a photo, check out this tutorial on how to make vector art using photoshop...

It's fairly easy if you are comfortable with the pen tool and have a lot of patience!

I don't know enough about the softwear to help, but you should cheak out out the work of Mel Ramos, you will love his work, his influenced all of that kind of work.

Those look adapted from photographs to me.
