all the answers are right, but the catch is hthat he had a clause in his contract that allowed him creative control for his last 30 days....
He was to fight shawn at Survivor Series in Montreal and win, Then the next day on Raw he would relinquish the title and head to WCW without incident.
what happened was that at the end of the match, Bret was to win on a sharpshooter over Shawn, but McMahon came out and "indicated" to Shawn to reverse it, Bret didn't notice. He thought it was ad-libbing and showboating, so went with it. he was in the process of breaking it as McMahon told the ref to ring the bell and declare Bret as submitted.
Brett then was furious, screamed at McMahon, spat on him, and stayed in the ring for 10 minutes air signing WCW.
The Key to the "screw job" is that he legally had creative control and was not told by Vince that this was in the works....

It's now known as the Montreal Screwjob. When Bret was about to jump ship and head to WCW, he and McMahon had an agreement that his final match against Shawn Michaels would end in a double DQ. However, at the last minute, Shawn beat Hart, as McMahon had secretly told him to do (or as Shawn had suggested- it's up for debate). His long run in the WWF was ended in disgrace.

as best of my knowledge bret was leaving then WWF to go to WCW. vince asked bret to lose the match since he held the then WWF championship. it would just make sense to lose the championship since you were leaving. bret did not agree with vince. so during the match HBK had bret in a sharpshooter and vince called for the bell ending the match and awarding the WWF champioship to shawn michaels. but bret did not tap out which means he did not actually lose.

When Brett started to leave the WWE (formerly WWF), Vince told him he could keep his title and just quietly relinquish it the next day. The script called for Shawn Michaels to get disquallifed for him to get keep his belt. They were wrestling in Brett's hometown at the time and Brett didn't want to lose in front of his hometown. Someone was supposed to interfere causing the disqualification, I don't remember who, but they never showed up causing Brett to lose in front of his family and friends.
