Personally I use bath and body lotions and sometimes another moisturizing lotion. As far as the itching? It is because your skin is irratated/ burned and ready to peel and it causes you to itch.

Try these other sources:
Vitec Vitamin E Lotion moisturizes dry, chapped skin and helps soothe the discomfort caused by sun exposure. http://www.coolibar.com/05302.html

If you know anyone who owns or if you own an aloe plant, cut of a large leave and peel back the skin. Then use this to rub on your own skin, if there are any really bad spots you should leave the aloe there to let the skin soak up the nutrients. Aloe get that you buy is never as good as going to the source. BUy a plant.
Sunburn can be a kind of irritant dermatitis because it's red and may itch while it's healing. ...

I don't think there's any way to avoid the peeling following a sunburn. The skin is dead due to the over exposure and is "discarded" by the body, to be replaced by new skin. As far as itching, you can use After Burn. That should help to cool the skin and help calm the itching.

Use after-sun lotion with vitamin E and Aloe Vera. No guarantees though. If you've burnt your skin you will peel, this helps reduce the discomfort and limits the amount of peeling.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. I like to use Paul Mitchell Awaphuai spray and then some body butter from the Body Shop. Avoid additional sun or soaps or body washes with fragrance since they can dry out the skin. You probably get itchy from the top layer of skin beginning to flake off quiker then usual.

When I got sunburned, I just put regular skin lotion (it had a lot of vitamin E) on it, and it immediatley stopped peeling. So try that!

put vinigar on the burn as soon as possible that will prevent the peeling some. Also put aloe on it to sooth the burn and then it should heal quicker. your skin is itchy after tanning probably because the top layer of your skin has lost some of its moisture.

you can't, if you have burned bad enough to peel, then you have killed the outer layers of skin cells and they need to slough off. you can speed the process along by exfoliating and using lots of lotion
