I have been a high level EA for a 3 star Marine Leutennant General, worked with boards and am proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office including calendaring, budgeting, correspondance writing, etc. Since I live in an area with lots of celebs and CEOs, I would like to transition from EA to Personal Assistant. Any advice?

Many many years ago, right after college, I was a personal assistant to a celebrity (Oscar winning actor).

It's not an easy job.

To get your foot in the door, you usually need to know someone. I was friends with his lawyers girlfriend, and was recommended to him through them.

All of those "courses" that claim to teach you how to be a PA for a celebrity are a waste of money. You won't get a real job through them.

What you could do is become a PA for a regular person (Investment Banker, etc) and join an association for PA's after one year. Networking through the association is what will get you a job that is a step up.

You will need impeccable social skills. And brains. There is no such thing as "it's not my job" when you are a PA. You will see and hear a lot of things you wish you hadn't. You need to be able to multi-task at a breakneck pace and regroup in seconds when something goes wrong. You have to figure things you know nothing about out in minutes or even seconds. I can't even begin to describe how stressful it can be. You are the buffer between your boss and the world, and sometimes even between your boss and reality.

A personal assistant or PA is someone who assists in daily and personal tasks, for example at an office a PA might be a secretary and might also have other duties such as making coffee, doing tasks in that person's honour or helping with the running of the business
