just make sure you follow your man or keep an eye on him and concentrate hard and try to anticipate his moves to so can either deter his movement or steal the ball...in a zone defense do the same thing but concentrate on who has the ball instead of just one man

The first major principle that one must follow for good defense in observing .e.g when defending a new player check him from a few paces away from him .Just observe .Do not reach out for the ball or the block because as soon as you offense is clear how you operate easier will it be for him to beat you and the more degrading will it be for you.
After observing a player for 5 - 10 minutes start by making your of fence scared of you by some strong and aggressive movements .
Then after one has observed him /her check him by realizing your strong points and his/her weaknesses e.g if you are 6 ft and the of fence is 6'5 then there is no way you can block him .
Thus if you are shorter concentrate on keeping to him in all his movements and not letting him near the ring under any circumstances because the closer he /she he is the better range ,dunk ,lay up he /she gets
In all defense is all about aggressive observing, making him scared of you(doubtful ),continuously modifying, never being too obvious and most of all correctly identifying the strong holds and weaknesses.

there is many way to be good at this...
i always make a fake opening for the opponent. then when they go to the opening, STEAL the ball and make a fast break! then score!! yeah~
another way is...i like this way but it needed a very fast movement. you steamboat the ball....i mean steal it when the oppenent pass it .... this way is soooo cool, but only if you can steal it.

give them 1 way to go take away their strong side for example if they're right handed block out their right side. don't fall for pump fakes. if they're a shooter stay a lil close to them if they have hnadle give them a lil bit of room. just keep on eyes on the ball. plus play physical ruff them up a lil bit.
