I have an idea for a product. I just do not know where to begin. Where should i start if I want to go from idea to reality. It's very marketable, fuctional, affordable and even has a catchy acronym as it's name. Where do I begin the process of developing the product. I know I would need to have it patented, so that no one can just use the idea. What other steps should I take? Finding financing is not so much my concern, finding the right market is more important. Thanks so much for any help you can provide. If it helps any further (to know local regulations) I am from North Carolina.

That's really not enough information to give advice. It depends on what the product is. Obviously, patents should be on the forefront and finding a designer (unless you can do this) to put together sketches, designs, spec illustrations showing how it works, etc. You'll need to look into manufacturers, have a business plan, possibly an ad agency/design house/freelance designer to help you market the product when its ready for release. There are many steps involved in this and it all varies depending on what your final product is. Making deals with retailers to carry your product is yet another issue. The list goes on. If you want to ask anything specific feel free to email me.

You definitely need to do some market research. If money is not an issue than try and source out an independent marketing consultant.
- You need to find your target audience.
- Do a SWOT analysis(strengths & weaknesses ) a mktg
consultant can help you with this.
- Know your competition.
- Research your demographics and consumer buying habits:
- Gender
- Age group
- Level of income
- Marital Status

I'm from Canada, so unsure where you would find consumer statistics or regulatory information. I'm assuming your state government office or local Business & Consumer affairs. Have you registered yourself as a new business? Wherever you go to do that may be able to help guide you with statistical and regulatory info.

Sorry if this sounds a bit muddy, but not knowing what the product or service is makes it a bit difficult to give you more finite information.
Hope this helps.
Good luck and much success with your new endeavor.
